I guess he could have seen some signs of people still being alive and well there. Not to mention until a moment ago he has been a top Keeper, highly intelligent to that. Not to mention that he might just SUSPECT but a good bluff may be worth gold in right circumstances. (I suspect rereading might lead us to more er, leads) And Alice is not one to show us all the cards too soon :] So in cases like that I go "patience my dear, patience" on myself ;) Well, he has been going to the surface.
