Haven is one of the last thriving cities on earth, located deep underground.
Nadir is the Middle and Lower class of Haven, containing the majority of the city’s population: workers, sweepers and the former rich now living in poverty. Cyl houses the Upper class: peace keepers, government, rich business owners and retired crime families. Both Nadir and Cyl are divided into four areas; sectors and districts, respectively.
Society
Population
Haven has limited space and resources, requiring each family only one child. The couple must file for the right to conceive which can be a long and tedious process. The basis on which permission is given depends on last year’s death rate. Repercussion of not following this law results in the murder or exile of both the mother and child which makes street abortion heavily common.
Instead of burying the dead, every body is burned in the incinerator. Full records are kept on those who have passed away by operators (”In-Ops”). Unlike modern cremation, multiple bodies are burned at once and the remains are sent to the surface rather than returned to kin.
Sector Transportation
All Cyl transportation is by foot, escalator and elevator. Nadir is much larger but the streets are narrow and transportation is limited.
Bikes
There are pedal bicycles as well as motor bikes, though the latter is only available to peace keepers. Regular bikes are expensive and often stolen.
Carriages
Carriages are drawn by people, most commonly with a pedal bike or two attached at the front. There are also personal carriages for richer Nadir residents. The Suits, for example, have their own line of carriages as well as the most popular transport service in the first three sectors.
Train
The train system runs between all four sectors around Cyl but is controlled by both the suits and the sweepers. Only authorized people may use it and passengers are monitored closely.
Relations
Internally
Residents of Cyl have been tied up in a feud with Nadir ever since the city was opened which has only grown worse since the Venom assassinations. There’s a large gap in the social pyramid and prejudice runs thick because of the differences of quality in day to day life.
Economy
Citizens do not use solid money. All credit transactions are tracked by the keepers through cred cards. Haven officials regulate how much money is out on the streets 24/7 and have the power to cut accounts with no explanation. Illegal practices are often forced to involve the barter system.
Religion
All practice of religion is banned from Haven to prevent disputes, though it’s not strictly monitored unless it begins causing problems. There are underground churches and temples that keep to themselves while families may quietly pray in their homes.
